LDZ Cargo, the Latvian rail freight operator, is actively broadening its reach in the Baltic region, having recently won significant contracts in Estonia and secured access to Lithuania's rail infrastructure. This strategic expansion is in line with the company's goal to establish itself as a key rail operator in the region.
In a notable achievement, LDZ Cargo secured two public contracts in late 2023 with Enefit, a state-owned Estonian energy company. These contracts involve transporting approximately 100,000 tonnes of woodchips and 60,000 tonnes of petroleum within Estonia. This development is a crucial step in LDZ Cargo's strategy to integrate the Latvian and Estonian rail transport markets, enhancing its status as a regional rail transport provider.
Additionally, LDZ Cargo has gained entry into the Lithuanian market by obtaining access to the country's public railway network. This expansion means that LDZ Cargo now has the capability to operate freight services across all three Baltic countries. The company has already approached the Polish oil refinery ORLEN with an offer of 'pan-Baltic services', covering Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania. This move signifies the first time a single company will provide freight transport across the entire railway infrastructure of the Baltic states, marking a historic milestone in the region's railway history.
LDZ Cargo's entry into the Estonian market was facilitated by agreements with Estonian Railways and GoRail, allowing the company to commence operations there in early 2023. The company agreed to employ Estonian personnel as part of its expansion into Estonia. This move not only strengthened LDZ Cargo's regional presence but also filled the void created by the suspension of railway activities with Russia, showcasing LDZ Cargo's adaptability and strategic foresight in navigating the Baltic freight transport sector.
