Thanks to a South Korean business named ‘SK Innovation’, Komarom in Northwest Hungary is set to welcome a new lithium battery plant. After an investment of HUF 204 billion, the batteries will be designed for electric cars. At this point, we’re quite early in the process but the documents have now been posted to the Komarom city hall and it looks as though February could be the start date for construction.
From here, SK Innovation plan to start a test production phase in the summer of 2019 before then starting all commercial production at the beginning of the following year. Located within the Komarom industrial park, the plant will cover 66,000 hectares and, thanks to technology and the installation of shift work, will operate 24 hours a day.
For many, this move won’t be a surprise since the company has been in the news at home in recent weeks. The Investor, a South Korean business news service, stated that SK Innovation want to meet their demand more efficiently in Europe through an investment worth $779 million (this amount was later cited in a Reuters report). If Reuters has accurate information, which they normally do, the plant will be aiming for 250,000 EV batteries each year.
Since they already have a similar plant in Seosan, South Korea, construction and the start of production should go without a hitch. For Hungary, it won’t be the first of its kind after Samsung recently started production in a HUF 100 billion battery plant in Göd.
