Jan. 19, 2010 Czech motor vehicle production rose by 2.85 percent to a record 975,111 units last year, with passenger car production adding 3.2 percent to a record 970,410 units, the Automotive Industry Association (SAP) said Wednesday.
Higher production at TPCA Czech and launch of production at Hyundai Nosovice is behind the record result, said SAP head Antonín Šípek.
Anti-crisis measures introduced by many EU countries in 2009 were a great help for Czech car makers, Sipek added.
Czech passenger car production more than doubled in the past five years. Output of motor vehicles also increased in the past two crisis years.
SAP expects this year's production level to be comparable with last year. The level of one million cars produced is thus unlikely to be surpassed.
On Jan 7, Sipek estimated around a 3-percent growth in passenger car production to 970,000 vehicles in the Czech Republic in 2009.
Skoda Auto, the largest Czech car maker, produced 519,910 cars, down by 84,000 on the year, which is partly due to transfer of production abroad.
TPCA raised output by 8,200 to 332,489 cars and Hyundai, which launched operation at end-2008 with 12,050 cars, produced 118,000 units last year.
The plant producing Kaipan sport roadsters turned out 11 cars, a drop of two compared with 2008.
Besides car-scrapping subsidies, producers' focus on small-sized cars that are more popular at a time of crisis than medium-sized cars also helped the Czech car industry, as proved by the success of the Czech Fabia model on the German market, said Jiri Zouhar of PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Economic recovery that would raise car sales this year will not come earlier than in the second half of 2010. It might come earlier if any of the governments decided to introduce the car-scrap system again, said Zouhar.
Lorry production posted a drop of 60 percent to 1,091 units. Tatra production decreased from 2,252 to 808 vehicles and Avia production went down by 200 to 283 units.
Output of trailers and semi-trailers fell from 2,424 to 761 units.
Bus production reached 3,068 units, down by around 400 buses. Iveco ranked first with 2,527 buses produced, followed by SOR with 427 units and Tedom and KH motor Centrum with 60 and 50 units, respectively.
Jawa motorcycle producer turned out 542 units, a fall of 1,020 on the year.
