It has been announced that the European Investment Bank (EIB) will support the improvement of the railway along the TEN-T North Sea-Baltic Corridor by providing a €250 million loan to PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. The line runs for over 170 kilometres and connects Warsaw with Lublin; the loan will also be used to reestablish the Lukow-Lublin freight bypass which will see freight and passengers benefit from the 50 kilometre track.
Demand for rail travel has increased somewhat in recent times in Warsaw and this investment will go a long way to improving the travel times as well as the building of new tracks to deal with the increased demand. Security systems will be updated making all train travel safer and a new maximum transport speed will allow the service to become more efficient.
Laszlo Baranyay, EIB Vice President, has said “The EIB loan will help to improve Poland’s railways along a strategic Trans-European transport corridor with positive consequences for the environment, transport safety, capacity and speed. This will help to improve the quality of life of passengers, particularly people commuting to work in Warsaw and Lublin, as well as modernising the transport links needed to help further Poland’s economic development.”
The project is also set to be co-financed by EU funds which sees a continuation of the growing partnership between the PLK and the EU bank in recent times. A total of over €2 billion has been provided to the PLK by the EIB so far.
