Back in December 2013, Holzindustrie Schweighofer announced that they would be investing €150 million and the completion of a new sawmill has now completed this investment. Located in Covasna County, Romania, the sawmill covers around 70 hectares and has a capacity of 800,000 cubic metres per year. Not only will the mill gather wood from sustainable forests within Romania, they will also look beyond the border into Slovenia, Poland, Austria, Hungary, and more.
After this expansion, the company has now become one of the largest employers in the region with over 300 workers. When the factory reaches full capacity, this number is set to double and then some with over 650 workers. Furthermore, the business will be a key contributor to the state budget in the County. Why? Because the newly-installed sawmill is set to earn the budget nearly €7 million in tax each year.
