The coastal city of Liepāja is set to witness the transformation of its former metalworking enterprise, "Liepājas metalurgs," into a state-of-the-art industrial park, according to recent reports.
The commencement of the industrial park's construction is imminent, with a foundational contract of 10 million euros already in place. The project has garnered significant investor interest, with projections of over 275 million euros in private investments and the creation of at least 1,500 new jobs.
The Liepaja Special Economic Zone (SEZ) has secured a deal with the Central Finance and Contracting Agency (CFLA), obtaining 10 million euros through the recovery and resilience mechanism. This funding kickstarts the initial phase of the Liepaja Industrial Park project, furthering the vision of its development.
Currently, the site is blanketed in snow, with windswept, abandoned structures and large metal deposits visible. Concerns also arise from other waste present on the site, awaiting sorting.
The area is plagued by longstanding issues such as a heavy fuel oil pond and environmental waste, with insufficient funding for the necessary cleanup of the former "Metalurgus" site, as highlighted by Uldis Hmieļevskis, the SEZ manager.
Hmielevskis expresses optimism, noting that the initiation of the industrial park's construction is a significant step forward. The initial focus will be on establishing electricity supplies, providing incoming companies with access to the power grid.
Another priority is the development of road infrastructure within the area, which is sizeable enough to resemble a "town within the city."
