GKN Automotive, a global leader in drive systems, has successfully completed the construction of its innovative manufacturing facility in Felsőzsolca, near Miskolc, Hungary. This strategic move positions GKN Automotive close to its original equipment manufacturer (OEM) clients, reinforcing its market-leading status. Hungary's automotive industry is flourishing, with annual production figures reaching 420,000 cars and 1.9 million engines, making the region highly attractive for automotive businesses.
The new facility, set to commence operations in October 2023, specializes in producing sideshafts. GKN Automotive projects an initial output of around 230,000 sideshafts from October to December 2023, with expectations of increased production in the future. This expansion aligns with the company's commitment to advancing the electrification of vehicles by ramping up the production of essential electric vehicle components.
Spanning approximately 29,000 square meters, the facility integrates a production and logistics hall, an office building, and an engineering center equipped with advanced testing facilities. The emphasis on sustainable design and leading-edge flow production processes underscores GKN Automotive's dedication to eco-friendly and efficient manufacturing practices.
This Hungarian site enhances GKN Automotive's regional production network, joining existing facilities in Oleśnica, Poland, and Zreče, Slovenia. Collectively, these plants not only bolster the company's competitive edge but also cater to the escalating demand for eDrive systems and components worldwide.
Markus Bannert, CEO of GKN Automotive, expressed enthusiasm about the launch: “The opening of our cutting-edge facility in Hungary marks a significant milestone. Starting production in October, this site will play a crucial role in fulfilling the surging demand for our top-tier sideshafts.”
The choice of Felsőzsolca Industrial Zone as the site's location followed an extensive evaluation process. Its strategic position, conducive to international transport and trade, coupled with its proximity to Miskolc—a city with a robust education system and the prominent University of Miskolc—ensures a steady flow of skilled professionals, further strengthening the facility's operational potential.
