Spanish group, Ulma Packaging could be set to enter the Romanian food market with a major investment to meet growing demand for its products in the country, according to local news reports.
The reports suggest that the group, which produces a number of packaging solutions for a range of food products including meats, fruits, and salads, will make an initial investment of around €5m on building production facilities.
With Romania now a member of the EU community, the reports highlight the increasing number of opportunities available for packagers in Eastern European markets, as the countries economies are bought into line with other EU states. At last years Emballage packaging exhibition, more than half the company's present were from outside Western Europe.
The events organisers attributed this development to the increasing presence of Eastern European manufacturers and the strength of their domestic markets. In order to meet this growing demand, Ulma could begin production of its food packaging in Romania by the end of the year.
The reports add it has earmarked a 10,500 sq metre site for the plant at Nervia, near Cluj-Napoca.
By locating itself in the centre of the Transylvanian region, the construction would grant the company a strong base in the country to distribute its ranges of flexible and barrier films.
A spokesperson for the company was unable to comment on the speculation.
