Based in Estonia, Heinzel Holding GmbH is known for owning a mechanical aspen pulp mill; ‘Estonian Cell’. In 2015, biogas production reached five million cubic metres but this saw an increase in 2016 by nearly 60% to nearly eight million cubic metres. Furthermore, the mill also contributed nearly 50 GWh of natural gas to replace biogas.
Although only a new plant, progress is being made quickly thanks to top-of-the-range equipment and innovative solutions within the market. In terms of equipment, this can be seen with Europe’s biggest single biogas reactor.
After spending over €11 million and becoming the single biggest investment in Estonia in 2014, Estonia Cell finally utilised the new BCTMP pulp mill-linked biogas after years of discussion towards the end of the same year. As expected, the energy efficiency of the mill has improved considerably but it has also contributed to lower costs on natural gas for pulp drying. As a result, this improvement in reducing emissions has been recognised as the company won the 2014 Estonian Environmental Award for Business.
