Orlen, a major energy firm in Poland, has greenlit funding for the country's inaugural Baltic Power offshore wind farm endeavor.
This collaborative venture between Orlen and Canada's Northland Power has a budget allocation of €4.73 billion and will boast a 1.1GW output. Funding for this initiative was secured with a €3.8 billion credit deal signed with 25 banks, both local and international, in September.
Recently, Vestas from Denmark clinched a deal to provide 76 turbines for this wind farm project. Deliveries for the same are expected to kick off in early 2025.
Orlen has drawn up a roadmap, targeting to have the project up and running by 2026.
Additionally, Orlen has embarked on the establishment of an assembly terminal at Swinoujscie port in Poland. This terminal, expected to be operational between late 2024 and early 2025, will cater to the Baltic Power wind farm's needs and could potentially support upcoming offshore wind projects.
Orlen's chief, Daniel Obajtek, expressed the company's ambition, stating, “This marks the commencement of our region's most ambitious renewable energy venture. We're eager to capitalize on our expertise and expand infrastructure for forthcoming projects. The ongoing terminal construction at Swinoujscie is a case in point, slated for Baltic Power and our future wind farms with a collective 5.2 GW capacity.”
In response to these developments, Northland Power’s CEO, Mike Crawley, conveyed enthusiasm about participating in more wind farm endeavors in the Baltic Sea region.
