Valmet has been selected to supply an additive feeding system upgrade and a redundant steam reduction station system to Hamburger Containerboard’s mill in Dunaújvaros, Hungary. The combined investments will help the mill boost power boiler availability, improve environmental performance, and enable participation in the fast-growing electricity reserve market.
The upgrade to the additive feeding system was recorded in Valmet’s orders received for Q1 2025, while the order for the steam reduction station was booked in Q2 2025. Installation work for both projects is scheduled during the mill’s annual shutdown in autumn 2025. The order values remain confidential.
Dániel Panyi, Project Manager at Hamburger Containerboard Dunaújvaros, commented:
“We are pleased that our collaboration with Valmet continues to drive significant improvements. These projects will enhance boiler reliability, increase production flexibility, and open up new business opportunities for us in the electricity reserve market.”
Sampo Smolander, Sales Manager for Energy Services, EMEA at Valmet, added:
“Our cooperation with the Dunaújvaros mill dates back to the delivery and start-up of the Valmet CFB Boiler in 2015. Thanks to our long-term service partnership, we can jointly identify and implement development projects like these, and we are proud to keep advancing the mill’s performance.”
Technical scope of delivery
Valmet’s delivery includes two major system upgrades:
1. Additive feeding system upgrade
-
New calcium hydroxide silo with 100 m³ storage capacity
-
Improved acid gas removal from boiler flue gases
-
Two redundant feeding lines to secure continuous operation and enhance environmental performance
The expanded storage and upgraded feed system will allow more efficient and reliable handling of calcium hydroxide while supporting stricter emission control.
2. Redundant steam reduction station system
To join the automatic Frequency Restoration Reserve (aFRR) market, the mill must be able to provide down-regulation capacity to the electricity grid without compromising boiler load needed for cardboard production.
Full project scope
Both deliveries include:
-
Engineering and design
-
Manufacturing of new equipment, piping, and valves
-
Automation system modifications
-
Project management and on-site supervision
-
Installation and commissioning
Valmet’s solutions will support the mill’s long-term development strategy, combining environmental compliance, operational stability, and access to emerging energy-market opportunities.
