The two largest supermarket chains in Poland are in a neck-and-neck race for top spot in the market, reports Puls Biznesu.
Last year, Biedronka saw revenues of zĹ.16 billion via a range of 1,500 stores. The firm plans another zĹ.1.1 billion of investments through 2010.
Its top rival, Tesco Polska, made zĹ.10.5 billion in 2009 from sales at its 350 stores.
Through 2010, Tesco plans to invest another zĹ.800 millions into its operations.
Portuguese firm Jeronimo Martins has been shoveling money at Biedronka, but the British chain does not want to go out without a fight and have promised the Polish arm some serious backing in the coming months.
