According to the release of recent information, sales of wood pellets grew in many markets recently including Sweden and the UK. In total, exports to these two major buyers now stand at €4 million and €2 million respectively. However, the biggest market for Estonia here remains as Denmark who accounted for €7.7 million.
When it comes to sawn and planed timber, this is still the largest product group but sales fell by 3.3%. Furthermore, sales of wooden furniture reduced by nearly 18% whilst building elements exports fell by 20%. Even after this, there were bigger decreases in other product types and the biggest came with unbleached paper exports.
In total, Estonia exported over €140 million worth of wooden products which is a decrease of 2% compared to the previous year. Despite this, exports for wood products are still vital for balancing foreign trade. At the beginning of the year, Estonia’s foreign trade deficit stood at €160 million which is a huge increase from the beginning of 2015 of around 270%. Perhaps some better news, wooden product imports also fell by 10% in January compared to twelve months previously which suggests that many Estonian producers are selling more at home.
