Construction works on the first IKEA hypermarket in Bulgaria was officially launched on June 3 this year.
This has been announced by Vassilis Fourlis, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Fourlis Group, IKEA's franchise holder for the region, who invited media to the groundbreaking event. The ceremony will be attended by Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.
The hypermarket will be located at the intersection of Sofia Ring Road with Bistrishko Shosse Boulevard and will spread over 28 000 square meters.
The project is expected to create 800 new jobs.
During his visit to Greece at the end of last year, Bulgaria's Regional Development and Public Works Minister Rosen Plevneliev announced that IKEA will have its first Bulgarian store in 2011. The company has announced plans to build two more stores in the country - in Varna and Plovdiv.
The Swedish company IKEA, renowned for its cheap range of flat-pack furniture, has 301 stores in 37 countries.
