Poland has relaxed foreign car registration regulations to fulfill a European Commission directive that cuts out the extra technical tests required by the Polish government.
From 22 September, it will be possible to register foreign-purchased cars in Poland simply by presenting a certificate of the last dated technical inspection rather than having one done in the country.
The European Commission asked the European Justice Tribunal to push Poland to align regulations on automobile registration after the Polish government refused to change the laws, claiming that the EC’s regulations are not sufficient for assuring road safety. In May, however, the Sejm, the lower house of parliament, voted to change Polish stipulations.
“We could have junk on our roads. Clerks do not have the right to check if a car came [into Poland] on its own wheels or on wreck transporter,” claims Kazimierz Zbylut, head of the Polish department of motor vehicles.
In January alone, Poles brought in 43,000 used cars. In May, that figure ran over 60,000 vehicles. In total, up until July, Poles registered 386,000 used vehicles imported from abroad.
