The Polish construction giant Budimex, in collaboration with France's Eiffage and Italy's Rizzani, is set to construct a 230-kilometre high-speed railway in Latvia. This railway forms a part of the extensive Rail Baltica project and is valued at €3.7 billion.
The tri-national consortium formalized the agreement for this significant infrastructure project in Latvia this Thursday, as reported by Poland's forsal.pl.
Budimex's role in this venture includes laying the tracks for the high-speed railway and constructing the associated civil engineering structures. This includes the creation of 175 engineering structures and 11 wildlife crossings, as stated by company officials.
The construction of this 230-kilometre railway section is scheduled to commence in 2024, with a projected completion date set for 2032, as per Budimex’s announcement.
Funded jointly by the European Union and Latvia, the project's total worth is estimated at €3.7 billion, as reported by forsal.pl.
This high-speed rail link, known as the Latvian segment of Rail Baltica, aims to connect Tallinn in Estonia with Warsaw in Poland. It is designed to integrate the Baltic states more seamlessly into the broader European rail network, as officials have indicated.
Budimex highlights that Rail Baltica will enable passenger trains to travel at a design speed of 249 km/h and freight trains at 120 km/h.
The new rapid rail link will significantly reduce travel times, allowing journeys from Warsaw to Vilnius in just 4 hours, to Riga in 5 hours, and to Tallinn in approximately 6 hours and 45 minutes, as per reports from forsal.pl.
