Poland Secures €5 Billion in Loans from European Investment Bank, Says Vice-President
Poland has secured approximately €5 billion in loans from the European Investment Bank (EIB), the principal lending institution of the European Union, in 2023. This information was disclosed by the bank's vice-president, Teresa Czerwińska, in a recent interview.
During her conversation with Poland's wnp.pl, Czerwińska revealed that "the EIB’s contribution to the Polish economy is expected to range between €4.8 and €5 billion for the year 2023."
Furthermore, the EIB's vice-president hinted at a potential increase in financing for 2024. This boost is anticipated to supplement the release of EU recovery funds designated for Poland, currently stalled due to ongoing disputes between Warsaw and Brussels regarding the rule of law.
Czerwińska also mentioned the EIB’s plan to allocate €175 million towards Polish universities and R&D centers in 2024.
Looking ahead, the EIB intends to channel a larger portion of its loans towards supporting the burgeoning renewable energy sector in Poland.
Earlier in the week, Czerwińska had announced a separate EIB funding package, which includes PLN 244 million (€56.2 million), aimed at supporting the medical department's development at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, along with other EIB-funded initiatives in Poland.
