The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) Grants €90 Million Loan to Boost Lantmännen Unibake’s Bakery Production in Romania
EBRD’s substantial loan aids the expansion of Lantmännen Unibake’s bakery operations in Romania. The investment will finance the construction of a cutting-edge bakery production facility in Bucharest. The new bakery, aligning with top-notch sustainability standards, will be among Lantmännen’s most significant facilities.
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) confirms its commitment to agricultural and food industry advancements by approving a €90 million loan for the Swedish agricultural leader Lantmännen Group’s Romanian expansion. This significant investment underscores Lantmännen Group’s reputation as a powerhouse in agriculture, machinery, bioenergy, and food products, backed by 18,000 Swedish farmers and a robust global presence.
Lantmännen Unibake, a pivotal part of the group, operates over 30 bakeries worldwide. Its Romanian branch, Lantmännen Unibake Romania, has cemented its status as a prominent frozen bakery product producer in the nation.
This strategic move by EBRD funds the development of Lantmännen Unibake Romania’s innovative bakery facility in Bucharest, poised to become a pivotal production hub for Central and Southeast Europe.
Adhering to EBRD’s Green Economy Transition building criteria, the facility is a testament to Lantmännen’s commitment to sustainability, including Lantmännen Unibake’s decarbonisation goals approved by the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi).
Upon completion, this establishment is set to be a cornerstone of Lantmännen Unibake’s bakery operations, enhancing Romania’s export capabilities in bakery products, leveraging its status as one of Europe’s prime wheat exporters, and fostering modernisation in the nation’s bakery sector.
Lantmännen’s dedication to social responsibility is evident in its vocational training initiative aimed at empowering young men and women with practical skills and employment opportunities in food production.
As a key institutional investor in Romania, EBRD’s ongoing contributions are significant. With over €10.5 billion invested across 515 projects in Romania, EBRD focuses on infrastructure, private sector productivity, and the development of financial sectors and capital markets. Notably, in 2022, over 61% of EBRD’s investments in Romania were directed towards the green economy.
