Global logistics giant DP World has announced a significant investment of €130 million to enhance Romania’s standing as a key European trade hub. The funding is aimed at developing three new facilities across the country, solidifying Romania’s role in the movement of goods between Europe, the Black Sea, and beyond.
Major Developments in Constanta Port
As part of its investment, DP World has allocated €65 million to expand operations at Constanta, the largest container port on the Black Sea. The new facilities include:
- A 5-hectare project cargo terminal, purpose-built to handle heavy, oversized, and complex cargo.
- A state-of-the-art RoRo terminal, capable of processing up to 80,000 vehicles annually at full capacity.
In addition, DP World is investing another €50 million to establish a multi-transport platform in Constanta, set to open in 2025, which will streamline cargo movement and improve multimodal connectivity.
New Logistics Hub in Aiud
DP World has also inaugurated an 8-hectare intermodal logistics hub in Aiud, Romania’s industrial heartland. The facility, developed with an investment of €21 million, seamlessly integrates rail and road transport, enhancing connections with DP World’s sea, rail, barge, and trucking services. This hub is expected to boost Romania’s logistics capabilities and strengthen trade links between mainland Europe and the Black, North, and Adriatic Seas.
Driving Economic Growth and Connectivity
DP World has invested over €250 million in Romania since 2004, including contributions from EU grants. The latest projects aim to:
- Increase annual cargo flow through Romania by approximately 2 million tonnes.
- Position Constanta as a leading container and RoRo hub in Central and Eastern Europe.
- Encourage global businesses to expand or relocate manufacturing to Romania.
Rashid Abdulla, CEO and Managing Director of DP World Europe, highlighted the country’s strategic importance, saying:
“Romania is a dynamic economy, well-positioned to capitalize on the rise in nearshoring and manufacturing. Our investments will support Romania's growth as a vital trade and economic hub in the region.”
Future Plans to Bolster Regional Trade
To further enhance its footprint, DP World plans to open a Center of Excellence for services in the Balkans. This initiative will facilitate trade for surrounding countries, strengthening Romania’s position as a central logistics and trade hub.
Cosmin Carstea, CEO of DP World Romania, added:
“Our commitment to Romania is long-term. With these investments, we are enhancing the flow of goods and establishing Constanta as one of the most important logistics hubs in Central and Eastern Europe.”
A Transformative Investment for Romania
This €130 million development underscores DP World’s dedication to transforming Romania’s trade and logistics landscape. By improving infrastructure and connectivity, these projects will not only bolster Romania’s economy but also cement its position as a gateway for European and global commerce.
